Independent consultant with over twenty years of experience in the voluntary and community sector.
I am an independent consultant with extensive experience of working and volunteering in the voluntary and community sector. Much of this has been in grant making, including developing and managing funding programmes to catalyse the social change ideas of entrepreneurs and delivering an economic justice programme for an independent charitable Trust. The latter provided funding to local and national charitable or not for profit organisations.
Financial exclusion, inequality, asset-based community development, community wealth building and inclusive economies are areas in which I have particular interest and knowledge. I am committed to enabling and nurturing the voices of those with less influence to be heard by those in positions of power and sharing and promoting those voices and lived experience across networks.
I gained considerable professional satisfaction and achievement from working at all stages of the grant making process including assessment, capacity building, monitoring and evaluation and strategic review. On multiple occasions, I worked strategically with other Trusts and Foundations to share learning, align grant making and review shared impact. I was also a co-convenor of the Poverty Network hosted by the Association of Charitable Foundations.
My skills include:
- Supporting community organisations to shape and develop a project idea into a coherent grant proposal;
- Building strategic partnerships and learning between funders, and between voluntary sector and campaigning organisations;
- Working creatively to identify opportunities for collaboration between stakeholders with overlapping challenges to energise activities and strengthen voice and impact;
- Exploring safe and nurturing mechanisms through which those with first-hand experience of poverty or inequality can share their voice and views to develop practical solutions with stakeholders, in particular local authorities;
- Developing and reviewing organisational funding strategies to ensure continued impact within a changing political and socio-economic landscape;
- Providing capacity building to charitable organisations in areas such as governance, fundraising, evaluation and risk management;
- Managing a diverse range of projects to deliver impact at an organisational level or to influence an area of policy;
- Applying a critical and constructive eye to projects and policy to consider whether they reflect the experiences of communities, taking a bottom up approach to consultation and implementation.
